The present study examined the relationship between age discrimination and driving cessation and the moderating effect of geographic region (i.e., urban and rural areas) among older adults in Korea. Drawn from the 2017 Survey of Living Conditions and Welfare Needs of Korean Older Persons, we analyzed a total of 2,709 adults aged 65 or older with a history of driving. Logistic regression analyses were used to analyze whether the relation between age discrimination and driving cessation among older adults varied by geographic region. Results from logistic regression analyses showed that demographic and health related factors were associated with driving cessation, and the relation between age discrimination and driving cessation among older adults varied by urban and rural areas. Having the experience of age discrimination increased the odds of driving cessation among older adults living in urban areas, whereas the effect of age discrimination on driving cessation was not significant among those living in rural areas. Results from additional analyses indicated that the relation between age discrimination and driving cessation in urban areas was marginally significant and predictors of driving cessation among older adults varied by urban and rural areas. Findings of this study highlight the geographical differences and the significant role of ageism for improving lifelong mobility in later life. Future implications for reducing ageism in daily life are discussed in social context to promote older adults¡¯ quality of life.
